Monty's, Tex Tubb's at The Vegan Chili Cook-off at Goodman Community Center

September, 2011 - I was one of three lucky judges at the event, which featured six local chilis and 160+ hungry guests (more than double last year's event). The judges tasted blind, but I was able to guess three out of the six based on tell-tale ingredients. Read More...

Meet Monty’s Matt Pace

September, 2011 - Like many of our local chefs, Matt grew up in a family in love with cooking. He jokes as soon as they got up in the morning, they were talking about dinner that night. Holidays were centered on traditional foods with the entire family anticipating his grandmother’s repertoire of Dutch, German and Italian dishes. Read More…

Let’s Eat for $7.70: Classic diner meals on wheels at new Monty’s cart

August, 2011 - Having enjoyed the meatloaf sandwich at Monty’s proper, I ordered one to see whether it measured up. The sandwich, as served both on Atwood Avenue and from its mobile cart, is all killer and no filler. Mine was prepared on a small grill inside the diminutive blue-and-white cart while I watched and served to me hot and wrapped in grease-proof waxed paper. Read More...

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream Mixed With Alcohol

July, 2011 - Summer’s here and the time is right for slurping down concoctions made with two of the world’s greatest inventions: ice cream and booze. Have you rescued a kitten stuck in a tree? Or stopped a train from hitting a school bus? If so, you deserve the ultimate reward: the Black Bavarian beer float at Monty’s. Read More…

Delectable Diner

July, 2011 - The sandwich was decidedly unlike anything you would find in an actual diner, but you know what else? It was fantastic. So simple as to be humble, modestly proportioned, slightly crunchy, a little tangy and a little sweet, Monty’s breakfast sandwich left me perfectly satisfied with my brunch choice. Read More...

Monty's Blue Plate Diner, Tex Tubb's Taco Palace at Mad City Vegan Fest

June, 2011 - Yesterday I attended the first ever Madison Vegan Fest, and it was a great success. In fact, the organizers were very surprised at the astounding turnout. I volunteered to take some photos, and when I arrived around noon, I was pretty overwhelmed by the packed venue and the difficulty of getting near the vendors and samples. Read More...

Community lunch to aid food pantry

April, 2011 - A meal with friends doesn't nourish only the body. It can also build up the spirit of the community. That's the idea, anyway, behind an event Sunday that planners hope will be the first of many - a community luncheon whose proceeds will benefit the Rio Food Pantry. Joey Connaughty, co-owner of Monty's Blue Plate Diner in Madison, said the event is intended as an opportunity for her to give back to a cause she believes in, and to invite others in and around Rio to do so as well. Record number of food carts ready to hit the streets

April, 2011 - The arrival of food carts on the UW-Madison campus and around Downtown is a sure sign of spring — and street food in Madison has never been more popular than it is right now, officials say… Also new this spring is an extension of a well-known East Side restaurant — Monty’s Blue Plate Diner. Doug Moe: Celebrating 20 years of meals at Monty’s

July, 2010 - They’ve been celebrating 20 years of Monty’s Blue Plate Diner all week, and the other night everyone in the Atwood Avenue neighborhood was invited to come by for a photo with the staff.

Something about the assembled group photo got to Monty Schiro, whose name is on the restaurant sign. One of his young staffers was holding his infant son. Schiro couldn’t help but remember another photo, taken just after the restaurant opened. In the photo Monty was holding his own infant daughter. Read More...
